Francis Street Building

Museum on the Move
The Museum is on the move. The Museum’s curators, designers and other staff are beginning preparations for the relocation of the Museum’s administration offices, research collection and two galleries from the Francis Street building.

The Francis Street building (pictured left) is one of a number of Museum buildings located at the Perth site. The five-storey building does not meet the current functional and safety requirements of the Museum. It has been closed to the public to allow staff to prepare for relocation of the building’s facilities. The rest of the Museum at Perth remains open and we welcome local visitors and tourists.

Preparations are underway to relocate Katta Djinoong Aboriginal gallery from the Francis Street building to the Beaufort Street building. The other public gallery in the Francis Street building is the Marine Gallery on the fifth floor. It is likely that some of the displays will be moved to other galleries onsite and to the other branches of the Western Australian Museum. Alternative accommodation for staff and the research collection is also being planned..

The Perth site is still home to a number of exciting galleries and public facilities including:

Stories to Tell: Bardipwarrang An
Mezzanine Level, Hackett Hall
January 6 - April 20, 2003. Free entry.

Stories to Tell: Bardipwarrang An catches the eye and the imagination. Sliding nuns and magical lolly trees, stooking hay and eating jelly and custard in the back of an old T-Ford – these are some of the engaging stories told by noongar artist Laurel Nannup through woodcuts and etchings. Captivating, bright and often humorous, each artwork has an accompanying tale drawn from the artist’s childhood in the bush, on Pinjarra Reserve and in Wandering Mission. The layers of story resonate, allowing you to experience some of the wonder and joy, as well as the sorrows, of a uniquely Western Australian childhood. An exhibition for the whole family.
